What is the 20 Different Art Styles Challenge?

This art challenge sounds like it’s complicated and a lot of work. But it’s actually deceptively simple. All it involves is testing out 20 different character art styles.

So, what does that mean exactly? Well, you’ll need to draw the exact same character, but using a different drawing style each time.

Another option is to draw yourself in different styles. That’s both challenging and funny, as you reinvent yourself in ways you’ve never imagined before. Drawing self-portraits isn’t easy at the best of times. So, the self-portrait challenge will test both your skills and creativity.

Many people who take part use a template with a space for each art style. That way, you can see all your drawings next to each other and compare them. It gives you an overview of all the styles and looks striking. You can either work on your computer if you’re a digital artist or print it out to work on paper.

The original challenge suggested using iconic cartoon styles from major films and shows. Some examples of good art styles for characters include:

  • Pokemon
  • Tattoo
  • Pixellated
  • Dragon Ball Z
  • Tim Burton
  • Portrait
  • Disney
  • DC Comics
  • Lego
  • Studio Ghibli
  • Powerpuff Girls
  • Naruto

You could take your pick from this art style challenge list or come up with your own styles. With this challenge, you can make it your own so long as you follow the basic guidelines!

If you’re not familiar with certain styles, you can do some research. You might get inspired by this new-to-you style and enjoy it more than your regular style. Plus, it can provide you with interesting ideas for your original artwork.
